I shipped a fully responsive MVP for a new feature that allowed small business owners (SMBs) to upload, store and share their business licenses and permits. This helped LegalZoom to shift from a transaction to subscription model, increasing in-product LTV by 57% and growing revenue to $2.2M.
I conducted user research interviews with SMBs that were managing their own business licenses and permits. Here's what I learned:
1. SMBs are not organized when it comes to their licenses. They're using physical folders, Google Drive and pictures to keep track of and share their licenses.
2. When it comes sharing licenses with external clients, SMBs are sending pictures via SMS or sharing Google Drive links, which doesn't make them feel professional and legit.
3. SMBs have a hard time managing what licenses are required and which licenses they still need to get.
This was a 0-1 effort. The existing experience for BL was generating a list of recommended and required licenses for SMBs. Working with PM, I was able to build out 2 key features for the Business License product:
1. Easily upload licenses via desktop or mobile
2. Securely share your license details with vendors, clients and legal authorities.
For the MVP launch, we were unable to use OCR technology to read the uploaded license images and pre-fill details. However, by allowing SMBs to upload their licenses, we trained the OCR model to be leveraged for future releases.
I was working under a tight timeline to ship fast in 4 weeks so that the business could start making revenue off of the Business Licenses subscription product.
For the final design solution, I shipped a fully responsive MVP that allowed customers to easily upload their business licenses to LegalZoom and share them with their external partners. They can also edit their license details and learn about what other licenses and permits they need in order to keep their business compliant.
By shipping this MVP, we were able to increase LTV in-product by 57% and shift to a subscription model, growing revenue to $2.2M.
The next step is to implement OCR technology so that customers don't have to manually enter their license details.
